A God in the House

A God in the House

Written by Peter Selgin
Directed by Léland Downs

Judith Birch, a music teacher stricken with Alzheimer’s disease, wants to end her life; Dr. Peter Katseus, a former pathologist, has invented a device for helping the terminally ill “die with dignity” which shunned him from the medical establishment. Aided by her reluctant husband, Douglas, the couple seeks out Katseus in hopes he will agree to help her. But with Judith’s determination, along with her sympathy and appreciation for Katseus and his mission, stirred unanticipated emotions in the doctor. He rediscovers his own heart just in time to have it broken as the forces that have brought him and Judith together must ultimately divide them.

This production contains discussions of and a depiction of voluntary euthanasia.

Five Blue Haired Ladies Sitting on a Green Park Bench

A Comedy Written by John A. Penzotti

Anna, Eva, Rose, Gladys and La La had only two things in common when they met seven months ago: a park bench and a life well-lived. Through fond and sometimes painful memories, keen observations and a good belly laugh now and again, these gals are truly on the cusp of eighty, going on eighteen. Bound by each other’s strengths, wisdom and witticisms, each one unwittingly prepares for the day they leave the bench, perhaps for the last time.

Spellbound

Spellbound

Performed by: Mike Smith

A few years back, Chris Ramsay, a professional magician and YouTuber, asked a question of his nearly 7 million followers: “How many of you have ever seen a magic trick in real life?” The answer was surprisingly low. Of the small percentage that said yes, most had only seen some simple trick at a party or from an uncle. The reaction to Ramsay’s question had ripples in the magic community, but one person it affected was Mike Smith. Having returned to his magic cards during the lockdown, Mike thought about the fact that so many people never see a real magic trick, so the next day he brought a small packet trick to his English class, started his day with a grammar lesson, and then did a magic trick. Although not always appreciated by his ninth graders, they at least get to experience the wonder and amazement of a magic trick to take the sting out of grammar.

Spellbound is Mike Smith’s first full length magic show, combining mentalism, card magic, Rubik’s cubes, comedy, storytelling, and his love of theater, teaching, family, and of course, magic. Each magic routine is connected to a story from his life, some more true than others admittedly. For members of Town & Gown, there are stories about past shows and Mike’s time in Athens. For friends of Mike’s, you’ll learn what Mike considers to be truly magical. For others, there’s just good magic to experience. It will be a fun, family friendly show that will truly leave you with a sense of wonder and awe.
